Abrams on Shatner’s scene that never was
We actually had written a scene with him in it that was a flashback kind of thing, but the truth is, it didn’t quite feel right. The bigger thing was that he was very vocal that he didn’t want to do a cameo. We tried desperately to put him in the movie, but he was making it very clear that he wanted the movie to focus on him significantly, which, frankly, he deserves. The truth is, the story that we were telling required a certain adherence to the Trek canon and consistency of storytelling. It’s funny — a lot of the people who were proclaiming that he must be in this movie were the same people saying it must adhere to canon. Well, his character died on screen. Maybe a smarter group of filmmakers could have figured out how to resolve that.
and to add further wrinkles to to the pot
UPDATE: Not a flashback?
In the comments section below, Star Trek co-writer Roberto Orci elaborated on the Shatner scene:
Alex [Kurtzman] and I did indeed come up with a sequence for Shatner that we wrote before the strike, although technically it wasn’t a flashback.
Orci also promised he would ‘post the sequence in question,’ but only after the movie comes out.

| The last part about them not being a smart group of filmakers pretty much said it all. Not because they couldn't write something in, but because they wouldn't use Bill to regenerate ST. It's their movie and their decision, true, but it would get bigger bang for their buck if they'd let Bill have his way on this one. |

How pray tell does JJ Abrams sleep at night knowing that his limited outlook of scifi, hampers his creativity?
JJ... let us know if you ever read "The Return".

If I may be SO BOLD to ask,
When we keep insisting that Bill be in the Star Trek movie, aren't we subjecting him to typecasting? I mean come on folks! I love Jim Kirk as much as the rest; but, for heaven's sake, Bill is a great actor and is capable of creating other characters. His work as Denny is brilliant.
I would love to see him do some serious character acting, perhaps some Shakespeare or other classic characters (and yes, I know he did them when he was younger). And don't tell me it is because Hollywood cannot make money from it. I think they may be surprised to find a whole new audience out there. An audience that actually thinks with their brains and not their "you know whats."
OK, I am ducking now. I just don't like to pussy foot around with my opinions. |

Well said SMB. Fielding Chase must be out of prison now; a little older and certainly much wiser. Columbo won't catch him again |

Columbo: Butterfly in Shades of Grey (1993) I remember that one.
Classy villain, that Fielding Chase was. |

Sorry SMB but I disagree. Of course Bill is talented and versatile but the point here is Bill has stated over and over how much HE WANTED to be in this movie and since that is what he wanted I, and many other Shatner fans supported him in that, and feel he SHOULD have been, and deserved to be in the movie . Really has nothing to do with typecasting and has everything to do with supporting Bill in what HE wanted to do..
just my opinion.

Understood. It was a mistake to kill Kirk off in the first place. When the Undiscovered Country ended, the actors all signed their names to it (sort of like a curtain call). It was a clear ending to a series of Trek movies with the original characters. They went off into the sunset, so to speak and into the imaginations of fans everywhere who could only imagine all of the untold adventures that await them.
As a fan of the Next Generation also, I had no problem distinguishing between the two casts and would have enjoyed any NG movies without the killing of the Kirk's character. The movie makers clearly underestimated the capacity of the audience to accept both crews.
My opinion. |

Hey Paul,
Can't wait to see these. So far only one side of the story is out so can't wait to hear what Bill has to say.
By the way did you get the pic I sent you by email?

I guess I have never quite gotten over what happened to George Reeves years ago. |

I'm waiting for Mad magazine's parody of the new Star Trek! Morgram, you should see Mad's online pictures! They have one with O'Bama looking just like Alfred E. Newman! It's so funny! |
