mebbe its just me but these writers seem to have a very narrow view of shatners kirk, he died in generations how can we possibly bring him back etc etc

Well all i can say is there is a time frame between the time of the decomissioning of the Enterprise A and the launching of the Enterprise B where kirk was alive and well and orbital sky diving by all accounts so why cant they set the flashback cameo or whatever in that time frame, i dont think the cinema going audience can be that dense that they cant take a leap of faith and say yeah you can accept that kirk is alive hell why not just say stardate whatever 3 months before commissioning ceremony of the Enterprise B bam Kirk still alive no big drama

This isn't new information.

Some while ago, Roberto Orci said that a cameo role had been presented to Bill, and was initially "blessed" by Bill, who later required a larger part than could be sustained by the Spock-centric story.

Other members of Team Abrams have indicated that the ball has been in Bill's court. Production manager Stratton Leopold said, "Studio executives still hope to convince William Shatner to suit up as Captain Kirk one more time". Executive producer Damon Lindelof said, "Obviously it would be huge if Mr. Shatner wanted to be any part of the franchise."

This issue has never been given closure by Orci, who said, "With another year to go, who knows?"

Bill has said he had more than one meeting with Abrams. I don't believe that Bill would fail to talk business during those meetings, so his "I know nothing" remark to the fans and media comes across as a scrutiny dodge. Bill's remark is also belied by how he chose to make a public issue of his salary. Seems Bill does know the score, he just doesn't want to tell. That's his prerogative.

Needless to say, if truth is misrepresented by Abrams et al, Bill can retort in specifics.

I would like to know about the film itself and the direction Star Trek is going. I don't understand why people aren't asking about that.

If I may be SO BOLD to ask,

When we keep insisting that Bill be in the Star Trek movie, aren't we subjecting him to typecasting? I mean come on folks! I love Jim Kirk as much as the rest; but, for heaven's sake, Bill is a great actor and is capable of creating other characters. His work as Denny is brilliant.

I would love to see him do some serious character acting, perhaps some Shakespeare or other classic characters (and yes, I know he did them when he was younger). And don't tell me it is because Hollywood cannot make money from it. I think they may be surprised to find a whole new audience out there. An audience that actually thinks with their brains and not their "you know whats."

OK, I am ducking now. I just don't like to pussy foot around with my opinions.

I totally agree with every word you said. Very Happy

I really hope that, when BL ist over, there are some interesting films he can do ... and maybe some guest roles on TV, too.

Hey, it's time that he gets an Oscar nomination! Very Happy

Abrams on Shatner’s scene that never was

We actually had written a scene with him in it that was a flashback kind of thing, but the truth is, it didn’t quite feel right. The bigger thing was that he was very vocal that he didn’t want to do a cameo. We tried desperately to put him in the movie, but he was making it very clear that he wanted the movie to focus on him significantly, which, frankly, he deserves. The truth is, the story that we were telling required a certain adherence to the Trek canon and consistency of storytelling. It’s funny — a lot of the people who were proclaiming that he must be in this movie were the same people saying it must adhere to canon. Well, his character died on screen. Maybe a smarter group of filmmakers could have figured out how to resolve that.

and to add further wrinkles to to the pot

UPDATE: Not a flashback?
In the comments section below, Star Trek co-writer Roberto Orci elaborated on the Shatner scene:

Alex [Kurtzman] and I did indeed come up with a sequence for Shatner that we wrote before the strike, although technically it wasn’t a flashback.

Orci also promised he would ‘post the sequence in question,’ but only after the movie comes out.

curioser and curioser

Odd then, that with 'Enterprise ', the writers had totally rewritten most of the Star Trek history. So what canon are they supposed to be following, TOS, as we remember it, with no mention of an earlier Enterprise,or are they going to slip the odd reference to Archer and NX01, as a part of the 'new' Star Trek canon.Which would be odd as after all the other shows, and movies with hardly a mention of Archer and the 'first Enterprise' . Make sure and tell him well all said hello! Wink

You might even be there now Question Question

When it's 8 pm here it's about lunch time there isn't it??

Oh I have a question..My mum brought me tapes from our local library when I was at school. Any way there's one Bill narrated with a line.

'Twas brylic and the slthy toad did gyr and gimble in the wabe and the mo....rath out ....' (Please excuse the spelling it was blah years ago..)

I think it was Lewis Carrolls' either Alice in Wonderland or Alice Through the Looking Glass but I can't remember which one and I thought you might be able to help me.

Sorry to stray off the subject

Hope the recording goes well
