Paul,
Maybe we can make this a sticky for a bit?
A family from another site I visit (www.fark.com) has a young child with brain cancer. They just found out that their insurance will not pay for the treatment, and they can't afford the 100K bill themselves. They are trying to raise money through the internet. I thought I'd pass it along (as well as $5 myself....)

So far they've only raised about $4,000.
Even if you can't donate, try and post to any other forums or message boards you visit.
Just for curiosity's sake, and so we can all see where we're at (as a board) I'll post a poll that you can click on if you want.
Thanks!

I believe it's a problem with the treatment itself, being so new yet. I copied Joe's reply to another similar post below:
| Quote: | The hospital in NYC is Sloan-Kettering. They are have been doing a study with this treatment, and it has shown a lot of promise. But, they can not ship the treatment here. The docs here have been begging them to, but they want us up there.
The doctor at Sloan-Kettering specializes in this illness. He is about the only one that does, this is a very rare illness. We have called St. Jude, and other cancer hospitals. But they can not do anything. Sloan-Kettering is our only hope. |
Illness is: | Quote: | | It is Neurocutaneous Melanosis with Leptomeningeal Melanoma | . |

I know!
I generally don't donate money more than just the occasional loose change into the supermarket donation of the month bin.
But I can sure understand this! (having nearly been denied a basic dr. visit for lack of insurance). I'm really starting to develop an active hatred for our current "medical for the rich" system. |

Donated because I can't imagine....and because I'm so happy Joe is coming back from Thailand tomorrow.
I can't imagine what it must be like to know there is a treatment out there which could save your child.... |

Thanks GC.
I'm trying not to think about it. It's making my stomach turn one minute, and making me see red the next.... |

Ok, I am going to play devil's advocate. I admit that I have not read the links yet, but has anyone checked the story out? It seems that someone posted an article one other time about someone needing money and it turned out to be not what it was supposed to be.
I am willing to help. Just want to make sure it is REALLY going for what it is being asked for.
Sorry if it sounds negative, but in this day and time, one has to be cautious. |

Completely understandable. Short of actually tracking the guy down myself, I'm pretty sure it's real. The great thing about fark is it's farkin' huge! There are several people on that site that know him, or live near the hospital.
Check the links if you aren't sure. That's what I did. There's pictures and addresses, and an emaill addy. Joe has also been posting periodically today.
His son had a seizure though so he kinda missed the big surge of folks at fark (though a few people called him to send the word.) The donation website isn't updated per donation, just every few hours. Last I heard they had around 20K.
Sorry Gornman. But the fark thread should keep you entertained (NSFW as it is...) |

Thanks JT!
Yeah, towards the end of the thread on fark (some 1400 replies) Joe gave an update and left more contact info. You are free to contact the hospital and see if Brett is a patient there. They obviously can't give you his condition (HIPAA and all) but you can confirm he's there.
Pitchforks? In my thread?
/it's more likely than you think. |

Thank you. I will go and check it out. I know that when I had my two cancer surgeries years ago, people helped in many ways. I always look for opportunities to give back. |
